WHAT DO WE DO?

HAVING LIVED IN SOUTHEAST ASIA FOR SEVERAL YEARS AND WORKING IN THE MEDIA, WE’VE SEEN A LOT OF BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO GOOD BUSINESSES.

Websites that don’t work or don’t have the basic information that visitors want. Hotel photography that doesn’t reflect the actual experience of staying at a property. A social media presence that’s either too full-on or completely non-existent. And some of the copywriting we’ve seen appears to have been transformed into English by Google Translate.

With decades experience in writing, photography, filmmaking, print publishing, web design, multimedia, and social media, we decided it was time to start the Grantourismo Media Company to help businesses and organisations in the fields we love to communicate more effectively.

With years of experience in all the above fields, we’ve started the Grantourismo Media Company to help your business or organisation communicate effectively. We can help you with everything from a customised class in social media to a full blown website with our sparkling copy, editorial-style photography and a beautiful website design that not just looks stunning, but will look stunning on every device.

GET IN TOUCH WITH US TO DISCUSS YOUR PROJECT AND LET’S MAKE IT SHINE.

WHO ARE WE?

MEET THE TEAM OF THIS BRAND SPANKING NEW COMPANY

Terence Carter, co-creator of Grantourismo Media, a Full Service Digital Media Agency.

TERENCE CARTER

Terence started his media career as a technical writer and photographer and after several promotions went on to manage the design and production department of one of Australia’s largest publishers.

Terence studied film, photography and multimedia at the University of Technology, Sydney, while playing in pop bands and making films with his wife, Lara Dunston in his spare time.

With a contract to design a large corporate website in hand, Terence moved to Abu Dhabi in the Middle East, where Terence worked in the academic department of the UAE’s (United Arab Emirates) university system creating learning materials for students and eventually redesigning the university’s websites nation-wide. Terence also completed a Masters Degree in Media Studies with University of Leicester during this time.

With a webs design business partner in Dubai, Terence created websites for schools and corporations, before the lure of travel writing and photography took over, working on titles for Dorling Kindersley, Lonely Planet, Thomas Cook and Footprint as well as numerous travel and food magazines which he still does to this day.

A year-long round-the-world travel project, Grantourismo, starting in 2010, saw Terence get back to designing and coding websites, with groundbreaking Grantourismo going on to be regarded as one of the best travel websites in the world.

Now settled in Siem Reap, Cambodia, Terence is using all the skills amassed over his career to start Grantourismo Media where his primary role will be looking after web design and development, photography and video production.

Lara Dunston, co-creator of Grantourismo Media, a Full Service Digital Media Agency.

LARA DUNSTON

Lara Dunston has been writing professionally since 1987 and has been a magazine editor, feature writer, a destination expert for newspapers, and consulted on writing, social media and content strategy.

After stints for university newspapers, including Honi Soit at Sydney University, where Lara began an Arts Degree, she shifted to the University of Technology, Sydney. While studying for her BA Communications in screen studies, film production and writing, she began film reviewing and writing on low budget filmmaking for Film News and Independent Filmmaker.

Throughout the 1990s Lara and Terence spent most of their spare time making films, including their first feature film, a road movie called Come By Chance, which screened at film festivals. Lara continued to write on film; taught film history, scriptwriting, directing and producing; had a teen fiction novel published by HarperCollins; and worked as a publicist for a photography gallery.

In 1996, Lara commenced her first Masters degree in International Studies, travelling to South America for a year of in-country study in 1997. Lara developed an interest in the connections between film and travel and a passion for teaching that took Lara and Terence from Sydney to the United Arab Emirates in 1998 where Lara had faculty job teaching film, media production and writing to female Emirati college students.

Now settled in Siem Reap, Lara is using all the skills amassed over her career to start Grantourismo Media where her primary role will be looking after Social Media and SEO, copywriting and content creation.

  • Dinner: Terence's wonderful larb moo - Thai minced pork salad. I ate half the Mussaman gai (Thai Muslim chicken curry) before I thought to take a photo. It was leftovers from the night before and even more heavenly the second night. Terence has been cooking Thai food for so long that I realized I take for granted that it's going to taste as incredible as it does. #thaifood #thai #thaicooking #cooking #homecooking #larb #curry #currychicken #cookingtime #food #foodporn #foodie #foodstagram #foodography #foodpicture #foodlover
  • A charming mural demonstrating the Khmer 'sampeah', where each variation of the prayer-like greeting signifies a greater level of respect, depending upon age or status. The gesture is Hindu in origin, dating back to Cambodia's pre Angkor period and Funan Kingdom, which went through a period of Indianisation from the first century AD onward that had a great influence over everything from the architecture and art to the cuisine and culture. In Thailand, much of which was part of the Khmer Empire for centuries, the gesture is called the 'wai'. Locals don't expect visitors to Cambodia to use it, but they appreciate it when you do, as it's a sign of respect and interest in their culture. We teach our tour participants the sampeah and some basic greetings and vocabulary to make their experience all the more engaging and enriching. not join us on one of our Cambodia food tours? • Banteay Samré is a little visited Hindu temple built in the early 12th century that we explore on our Cambodia trips. It's surrounded by sturdy, well preserved, high walls and within is a mini Angkor Wat, an experiment in the architectural style of the world renowned temple. It's quite compact, so doesn't take long to see, and part of a causeway, in a very picturesque setting is still left too (which is where I was sitting to take this image). • Angkor Wat without the crowds. Mid-week during monsoon (low season) and we begin at the back so we see hardly any people until we reach the front. Come explore with us. • Traditional Khmer nom krok - puddings made from coconut milk and rice flour that can be savoury (with spring onions, corn, chili etc) or sweet (with palm sugar, shredded coconut, peanut etc) in a special cast iron pan and eaten as a street food snack with a sauce. Depending upon the city, region or vendor you might get a sweet chili sauce or fish sauce based condiment. I've also bought them served with a tangy fermented peanut sauce. They're known as khanom krok in Thailand and they're practically the same, and are also found in Myanmar and Laos, but their provenance is most likely India and where their cousin unniyappam, made from a similar recipe. Ignore Wikipedia as these are very different to Indonesia's serabi, which are drier and more like a pikelet. Nom krok is a creamy pudding within, with a firm fried exterior. Some other Thai sources call them dumplings, which they're clearly not. Lots more to come on these. #siemreap #cambodia #asia #travel #traveller #travelwriting #travelblogger #traveblogging #travelphotography #travelgram #culinarytravel #culinaryjourneys #food #foodie #foodies #foodietravel #foodwriter #foodphotographer #foodblogger #foodblogging #foodwriting #foodiesofinstagram #foodlover #cambodianfood #cambodiancuisine #streetfood #snacks #dessert #sweets #savoury
  • I've absorbed sunrise at Angkor Wat dozens of times but this was one of my favourites. I love arriving in the black of night to witness the astronomical twilight and the sky cycling through myriad shades of blue. I'll always welcome that gorgeous golden light that can set the sky ablaze but there's something about the early morning blues that takes my breath away and on some days even brings a tear to the eyes.
